The Birth of Modern Hebrew Literature (Zoom)

Modern Hebrew literature is intertwined with Zionism, though it is of course wider than that.

Starting with an introduction to the great literary works of the early twentieth century, Steve Israel will lead us in examining key figures such as Agnon, Bialik, Rachel and Tchernichovsky – who each brought something different to the rich and developing tradition.

Working in English, we will delve into different attitudes – from the balance between the old and new Jewish worlds and personal and national, to the roles of men and women.

Texts will be used in class, with extra reading offered but not required.

Bookings for this series will close at 7.30am Monday 5 October, with the Zoom link emailed to attendees directly.
